Jambaljamts Sainbayar
For a few years, there are
some young promising riders
coming from Mongolia.
Jambaljamts Sainbayar is one
of them. He is riding for
Belarusian Continental team Ferei - CCN and last year he won a stage of the Tour of Fuzhou.
His goals are to be the first
Mongolian in a World Tour team,
in the Tour de France and in the
Olympics Games cycling road
race.
The beginning
Jambaljamts Sainbayar was born on September 4, 1996, in Ulaanbaatar, capital of Mongolia. "I was 3 years old when I rode a bike for the first time, and I started cycling when I was around 15 years old in my mid-school sports team."
In 2013, he attends his first training camp, "it was in China for 3 months, I was riding in the Attila cycling club from Mongolia. That training camp improved me a lot, and I did some XCO (cross country) races there." In 2014, Jambaljamts joins the Mongolian Junior's National Team, that's when he starts to realize the possibility of becoming a pro cyclist one day. From the end of June to September, he goes to South Korea to train in the new UCI World Cycling Centre's Satellite in Seoul where he also rides his first big race: the Track Junior's World Championships. As from 2015, he's riding in the Mongolian National Team with the elite, he rides the Tour of Iran 2015 and 2016 with the National Team. In 2016, his coach from the Mongolian Military Cycling Team offers him a couple of races in China with the team RTS, he won some amateur races in both mountain bike and road, "I did some good results there so I got a contract for the next season." During the year, he also starts some races with the Chinese team TJ Sport Panda.
Jambaljamts Sainbayar rides with RTS Cycling Team in 2017 and 2018, the Taiwanese team is at Continental level. During these two years, he gets many tops 10 in Asian UCI races and finishes 24th of 2.HC Tour of Hainan 2018. He also wins the 2018 U23 Mongolian National Championship road race and many amateur races.

Ferei Pro Cycling
In 2019, Jambaljamts Sainbayar joins the Ukrainian (and then Belarus) Continental Team, Ferei Pro Cycling. Belarusian Kirill Klimenkov, who is the manager of Ferei Pro Cycling, told us how they recruited him as well as 3 others Mongolian riders: "Our Chinese boss Tommy Cheng has local team Panda and often invites Mongolian riders. They are big favorites in non-categorized Asian races. Also, our DS Antti and Anatoli Sizko knew, that level of these riders is really good. So, when we decided to register Ferei as UCI Continental team, Tommy Cheng invited 4 Mongolians. And they didn't disappoint..."
For his first year with Ferei, Jambaljamts rides almost only in Asia. From August to November, he has 5 UCI stage races in China. In August, he finishes second on stage 2 of Tour of Xingtai and won the point jersey, he is second on mountain classification of Tour of China I, and he takes seventh in general classification of Tour of China II. He had shown that he was in good condition, so his sport director Antti Sizko "was expecting a result(s) from him, he was consistently improving every race." And the big result came in November: Jambaljamts wins stage 6 of Tour of Fuzhou. The stage finish was at the top of a climb and he attacked from selected group at last kilometer, he managed to stay alone on the front until the line and raised his arms through the fog. "I was sure to make a good result in that stage, I was in strong condition after a long season and my teammates helped me a lot" In addition to the stage victory, he also takes an 8th place in general classification.
After the great result he had in Asia in 2019, Jambaljamts Sainbayar had a lot of interest from Chinese teams, he had very good offers but he chose to stay with Ferei - CCN. "Well, I got some good offers from the Chinese teams but my purpose was to race in Europe and also to stay with my old teammates because we already know each other. I wanted to race in Europe and our Ferei's calendar was so good for this season. Unfortunately, this pandemic makes it worse." Since march, he's leaving in Ferei DS Yahor Buben's home in Belarus but hasn't been able to ride any UCI race.
Jambaljamts Sainbayar takes his first pro victory on stage 6 of Tour of Fuzhou 2019, ahead of Carlos Quintero, Artur Fedosseyev and Xianjing Lyu.
Ambitions for the future
Jambaljamts Sainbayar seems to be a very versatile rider who climbs well but is not bad at sprinting either. He is also a very offensive rider: when he is not riding for GC, he usually tries to fight for the sprint jersey or the climb jersey. He considers that where he is the best is probably the hilly sprints, but climbing and riding for GC is also among his biggest strengths. Jambaljamts also mentions tactical races as something he thinks he is good at. Kirill Klimenkov (manager of Ferei - CCN) says that "Jamba is one of the most exciting riders I personally know. He is very attractive rider, who always try to attack. Also, he is a real all-rounder: Jamba can climb, he can sprint, he is very strong puncher and his ITT is not bad. He is an open-minded and clever person. Very responsible, never complains. And he is funny guy, as well." His Finnish DS Antti Sizko agrees: "I think he is a really humble guy, he has the right 'mindset' and work ethic to become a good rider. As a rider he is a universal, he took the sprinters jersey in Tour of Xingtai and two weeks later he wore the KOM jersey for 5 stages in tour of China. So, he can do it all."
Jambaljamts' ambition is clear: he wants to become the first Mongolian to ride in the World Tour; a goal that could appears hard to achieve as it is always difficult for riders from small cycling countries, but he really seems to have the potential for. "Sainbayar's results are really impressive. Also, his potential is extremely high. He is still young riders and lack some experience, but he fights against strong European riders in China and often beats them" Kirill Klimenkov says. To make it to the World Tour he will have to perform in Europe, that's why he re-signed with Ferei - CCN who were supposed to have a good program in Europe before the pandemic. "Our plan always was to give him as much of a chance to race UCI races in Europe, Antti Sizko explains, the epidemiological situation of this year ruined it all for us. So now he has been in Belarus just racing the small local amateur races. What I would want for him is to either to grow along side with our team or find something better, perhaps a chance in Europe in a UCI team. Because as we know the home of cycling is in Europe and nothing can replace the lessons you learn from racing in here." The future is uncertain due to the pandemic, so Jambaljamts Sainbayar is looking for a European team for next year, "but find a good team in Europe is not easy for Asian" he says. We hope that he will find a good team for next year because it's only by performing in European races that he will draw attention of World Tour teams, and he will already be 24 years old in September. In addition to be the first rider from Mongolia to be in a World Tour team and to ride the Tour de France, his third career goal is to be the first road cyclist to represent Mongolian in the Olympics Games, he will have to wait at least to 2024 because there will be no Mongolian in Tokyo's road race. "Overall, I am confident that we will hear from him, as it is only the beginning for Jamba and the overall rise of Mongolian cycling" Antti Sizko concludes.
Mongolian Cycling
Mongolian cycling is growing little by little for a few years, and Jambaljamts Sainbayar isn't the only promising Mongolian rider. "Well, Mongolian riders are one of the strongest in Asia, says Kirill Klimenkov. We have 4 riders, but they have much more. Their progress is impressive." Narankhuu Bat-Erdene (25 years old, national champion), Bold Iderbold (22 years old), Jambaljamts Sainbayar (23 years old) and Tegsh-Bayar Batsaikhan (22 years old, former Junior Track World Champion) are riding with Ferei - CCN. Maral-Erdene Batmunkh (25 years old) is riding since 2016 with Terengganu inc. TSG Cycling Team, one of the best Asian teams, and is a really strong rider in Asia Tour. Amartuvshin Battsengel (18 years old) is riding for South Korean Continental team KTX Korail Cycling Team. And there are others strong Mongolians riding for amateur teams in Asia, but also in France: Bilguunjargal Erdenebat (23 years old) and Gantumur Bat-Orshikh (24 years old) joined this year Team EC 14-Groupama. They did not race yet because of coronavirus, but Gantumur Bat-Orshikh was already riding in France last year, with CC Villeneuve Saint-Germain. The gold medal of Tegsh-Bayar Batsaikhan in the point race of Junior Track World Championships 2016 in Aigle was the greatest moment in Mongolian cycling history. Tegsh-Bayar was riding in the World Cycling Centre since a few mnthes and he had never done track cycling before he had arrived in Europe.
Even though there are many young talented riders from Mongolia, cycling isn't a popular sport in the country. "Cycling isn't the main sport in Mongolia, Jambaljamts confirms, and almost nothing has changed from the last years, but we are riders trying to improve the things in our cycling of Mongolia and leading for our young riders how to get in UCI level and international races as well." Former Mongolian riders Jamsran Ulziiorshikh and Tuulkhangai Tuguldur were very important to help riders of Sainbayar's generation. Unfortunately, Jamsran Ulziiorshikh who was considered as "our face of Mongolian cycling" passed away last year. Tuulkhangai Tuguldur is a mentor for many riders in Mongolia and is the coach of the Mongolian Military team where Jambaljamts rides.
The next step for Mongolian cycling will be to have pro riders in Europe, "It would be breakthrough moment for the Mongolian cycling" considers Kirill Klimenkov. It should not take too long...
